January 6th: Namaste

Tree. Mountain. Volcano. Happy Baby.

These words either bring to mind the plot of a Disney action adventure movie or Jenny Dungan's Yoga class at the South Neighborhood YMCA on Wednesdays from 10:30am to 11:30am. Tree, Mountain, Volcano...each of these terms describe a specific body posture in Yoga. Of course, these are but a sampling of the many techniques I learned today. I also learned how to shape my body into a downward dog and a crocodile.

Jenny's class was certainly an eye-opener for someone who admittedly had some preconceived notions about Yoga. As simple as the terms are for the postures, the actual techniques are not quite as easy. For those of you who think Yoga is for sissies-think again! Yoga is as easy or as difficult as you make it. Yoga is definitely a workout. In regard to improving muscle flexibility and overall balance, I cannot think of a workout that would better fit the bill. Many people forget how important flexibility is to overall physical well-being but our Yoga participants know better. Some of the ladies who were in the class can only be described as pretzel-like.

Of course, not everyone was advanced. Besides me, there were others that were new to the class. Jenny made each of us feel welcome and prepared. She went so far as to walk around the room offering us tools that would help us newbies to modify our workouts. I received a foam block and a canvas strap to help with certain stretches that are difficult for beginners. She coached us in a soothing voice and demonstrated each move slowly and with clear instructions.

A lot of what you hear about Yoga is true. There are low lights and candles and we even received lavender-scented cloths to place over our eyes during the relaxation phase of the workout. The music playing was definitely harp or flute or something. But you know what? It works. You really do feel at peace. The Yoga class is a time for meditation, reflection, or whatever you decide to make of it. You become really aware of your own body (for better or for worse). The misconception about Yoga is that it is just breathing and stretching. Jenny did coach us on our breathing technique and most of the postures did include some sort of stretch, but strength and endurance were also key. Even if I weren't so sore from Zumba yesterday, I still would have found Yoga to be a challenge. The good news was that when there was a form or posture I couldn't quite maintain, Jenny was quick to give a modification so that those of us who have yet to master the art, could succeed.

For those of you who have had the opportunity to meet Jenny, you know that she is a Dr. Jekyll and Mrs. Hyde. She can easily go from manic energetic cycle instructor to zen master Yoga instructor. She cares deeply about her class participants and is eager to help each of them reach their wellness goals. I recommend this class to anyone seeking some balance in their lives or a sore butt in the morning. ;o)
